1099 vs W‑2 Take‑Home

US federal only • 2025 brackets • standard deduction • deterministic

Calculator Tool

Enter annual gross pay once. This tool estimates take-home for W-2 and 1099 income under US federal rules only.

Example Calculation

Using a sample annual gross of $100,000, the calculator applies federal income tax rules and payroll/self-employment tax rules separately, then subtracts total estimated tax from gross pay for each scenario.

The live calculator above loads with a $100,000 example so visitors can immediately see the output structure before changing the number.

Formula

W-2 take-home = gross wages − federal income tax − employee Social Security tax − employee Medicare tax.

1099 take-home = gross receipts − self-employment tax − federal income tax, where self-employment tax is calculated on 92.35% of net earnings and 50% of that tax is deducted before federal income tax is computed.

Calculation Methodology

For the W-2 side, the calculator starts with gross wages, subtracts the 2025 standard deduction for a single filer to determine taxable income, computes progressive federal income tax using 2025 bracket thresholds, and adds employee FICA taxes made up of 6.2% Social Security tax up to the wage base and 1.45% Medicare tax on all wages.

For the 1099 side, the calculator treats gross receipts as net earnings in version 1, multiplies those earnings by 92.35% to determine the self-employment tax base, calculates the Social Security and Medicare portions of self-employment tax, deducts 50% of the self-employment tax for income tax purposes, then applies the 2025 standard deduction and 2025 federal income tax brackets. It does not include state income taxes, itemized deductions, business expenses, QBI, credits, benefits, or filing-status variations.
